RESUMO

BACKGROUND: During the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak in 2019, an increased large number of male nurses volunteered for frontline assignment. Their excellent performance suggests that male nurses have several advantages over female nurses. However, research into the activities of Chinese male nurses engaged in frontline work during the COVID-19 pandemic remains limited. PURPOSE: This study was designed to summarize the reflections of male nurses on their experiences while volunteering for frontline COVID-19 duty in Hubei, China. METHODS: An interpretative qualitative descriptive study was conducted from May to July 2020 on male nurses who had volunteered for frontline COVID-19 duty in Hubei. Twelve male nurses were selected using a purposive sampling method. Data were collected using semistructured interviews, transcribed verbatim, and analyzed using thematic analysis. RESULTS: Four main themes and 11 subthemes were identified, including (a) changing the way of thinking at work (four subthemes), (b) clarity regarding career development (three subthemes), (c) change in life philosophy (two subthemes), and (d) personal growth (two subthemes). CONCLUSIONS: The experience of volunteering during the COVID-19 public health emergency influenced the male nurses positively in terms of improved organizational, management, and decision-making skills as well as improved performance. The beneficial attributes of male nurses should be taken into consideration when developing management policies related to nursing personnel.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: The organisational silence of nursing teams has received increasing attention from managers. Chinese nurses have a relatively high score for organisational silence, and male nurses score higher than female nurses. Lack of professional empathy, high pressure in the work environment, and traditional Chinese cultural factors suggest that Chinese male nurses' experiences of and reasons for organisational silence are complex and unique. Taking male nurses in the emergency department as an example, this study explores the experience and meaning of male nurses' organisational silence and provides ideas for nursing managers to understand the silence of male nurses. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: An interpretative phenomenological approach underpins the study design. In this study, the purposive sampling method will be used to select male nurses who meet the inclusion criteria with maximum differentiation as a strategy. Face-to-face semistructured interviews and Van Manen analysis methods will be used for data collection and analysis. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION: The study was approved by the Ethics Committee of the First Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang Chinese Medical University (ethical approval ID: 2019-KL-036-01). Participants will provide informed consent, will be able to withdraw at any time and will have their contributions kept confidential. The findings of the study will be shared with relevant stakeholders and disseminated in conference presentations and journal publications. TRIAL REGISTRATION NUMBER: Chinese Clinical Trial Registry (ChiCTR2100047057).

Introduction: Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) corresponds to a severe acute respiratory syndrome that during the pandemic affected the lives of health professionals, especially nurses. Faced with this situation, several factors such as long working hours, devaluation of the profession, change in routine and coping with the disease and death of patients influenced the perception of Quality of Life (QoL) and the emergence of possible complications. Objective: To assess the quality of life of nurses diagnosed with COVID-19. Method: Cross-sectional study with a quantitative approach, carried out in Brazil with nurses, through online collection in google forms, with a consecutive sample. Nurses working in primary, secondary and tertiary care were selected; aged 18 years or over; of both sexes; working in private and health services; who had a confirmed diagnosis of COVID-19 at the time of data collection or past. Data were collected through a biosociodemographic survey and the instrument, for the assessment of QOL. To determine whether there was an association of sex, age, medication, length of service, and disease with QOL, the likelihood ratio test was used. For the correlation with QOL domains, Spearman's coefficient was used. The level of significance was α= 0.05. Results: 628 nurses participated. The female sex was predominant (89.5%); most used drug was losartan potassium (3.3%); the state of Paraná presented the highest percentage and response (20.6%). The most affected QOL domain was the physical one with x̄=(66.64) σ=(15.80). An association of sociodemographic variables with QOL domains was performed and the most affected association domain was the physical domain. The Sperman correlation that obtained a strong correlation (0.71) was the physical and psychological domains. Association of the Physical domain with the antidepressant variable, for each drug consumed more, an average reduction of 5.05 points is expected. Anxiolytic medication consumed more is expected to have an average reduction of 18.12 points in the psychological domain. For each antidepressant medication consumed more, an average reduction of 6.51 points in the social relationships domain is expected. For each anxiolytic drug consumed more, an average reduction of 9.37 points in the environment domain is expected. For each individual who consumes more anxiolytics, an average reduction of 20.08 points in general quality of life is expected. Discussion: QOL domains were affected. The physical domain resulted from work overload, working hours, fear, anguish that interfered with mental health problems, such as anxiety, depression, insomnia and burnout. Thus, the physical and psychological domain was correlated in the pandemic period. In addition, social relationships due to social isolation were reduced with visits to family homes, social recreation, peers and affection. The environment, especially at work, has become the place of pressure, insecurity and frustration, due to dealing with the new SARS-CoV2. Conclusion: The results showed the need for the professional to receive psychological support, inspection of the co-responsible councils, management supervision in order to provide working conditions and support that can improve the QOL of nurses and, consequently, provide qualified patient care

RESUMO

PURPOSE: This study was to investigate the work experience of newly recruited male nurses during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: With a phenomenological approach, this qualitative study was adopted semistructured interviews by phone or video calls. A total of 9 male nurses newly recruited for the COVID-19 wards in Chinese hospitals were interviewed for this study. And Colaizzi's method was applied for evaluation in the data analysis. RESULTS: Based on our findings, three themes were extracted. First, the newly recruited male nurses showed negative emotions at the beginning of COVID-19 epidemic, which was caused by changes in working conditions and content, but also prompted the nurses to change the way of coping with the crisis. Second, they gradually mastered the working skills and psychological training to cope with COVID-19 and developed a positive attitude toward life and a high sense of professional responsibility. Finally, we learned about their needs to respond to public health emergencies such as the COVID-19 pandemic. CONCLUSION: COVID-19 is a disaster for all of humanity. The newly recruited male nurses are an important force in emergency rescue. Although they suffered from short-term negative emotions, they quickly adapted to the crisis. In order to better prepare for future emergencies, the disaster response capacity of newly recruited male nurses needs to be further improved. In addition, newly recruited male nurses have a strong demand for timely and personalized career development guidance.

RESUMO

Men continue to be significantly underrepresented within the nursing profession, making up less than 10% of the Canadian nursing workforce. While studies have explored the challenges faced by men in nursing, fewer studies have explored the recruitment and retention barriers experienced by male nursing students. The purpose of this study was to explore the recruitment and retention of male nursing students currently enrolled in an undergraduate baccalaureate nursing program. Snowball sampling was used to recruit male nursing students (n = 17) to participate in focus groups where they shared what factors affected their decision to enter a nursing program and what experiences contributed to their decision to remain in the nursing program. The results of this research can contribute to the development of strategies to recruit and retain men in nursing and ultimately have the effect of diversifying the nursing profession.

A previously fit and well 37-year-old male healthcare worker presented with confusion, psychotic symptoms and a suicide attempt in the context of a new COVID-19 diagnosis. Following surgical interventions and an extended admission to the intensive care unit, he made a good recovery in terms of both his physical and mental health. A number of factors likely contributed to his presentation, including SARS-CoV-2 infection, severe insomnia, worry, healthcare worker-related stress, and the unique social and psychological stressors associated with the COVID-19 pandemic. This case highlights the need to further characterise the specific psychiatric sequelae of COVID-19 in community settings, and should remind general medical clinicians to be mindful of comorbid psychiatric symptoms when assessing patients with newly diagnosed COVID-19.

RESUMO

Nursing is not exempt from the social influences that affect other professions, and may in fact be rendered more susceptible thereto. Gender has potential to be such an influence, as its construction is based upon both social and historical factors. Gender has significant implications for nursing. Given that many aspects of the nursing profession remain largely female-dominated, it is sometimes assumed that otherwise common issues of gender bias are not a consideration. In fact, traditional binary gender roles and norms are often imposed and reinforced within nursing education and science, potentially limiting both diversity and innovation in the profession.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To investigate the changing tendency and influencing factors of the professional identity of male nursing students in 3-year colleges and junior male nurses in China. BACKGROUND: In China, the majority of nurses are 3-year nursing college graduates, among which male nurses are underrepresented. Many male nurses leave the profession 3 or 4 years after graduation. Little is known about the professional identity of Chinese male nursing students in 3-year colleges and junior male nurses. METHODS: This study included 237 male nursing students from a 3-year college and 33 junior male nurses with less than 3 years of experience in China. By using the data collected with the Professional Identity Questionnaire of Nursing Students and through in-depth semistructured interviews from November 2019 to April 2020, t-test, and ANOVA analysis in SPSS22.0 were conducted and thematic analysis was applied to interviews. RESULTS: Compared with undergraduate nursing students, Chinese male nursing students in 3-year colleges had a better professional identity, displaying a declining tendency with grades. Junior male nurses reported the lowest professional identity. Demographic factors such as family residence and presence of relatives in medical service were positively related to professional identity. Low professional identity was related to heavy workload as well as gender stereotypes. Two unique contextual factors influenced the professional identity: (a) curriculum setting and (b) nurse exams. CONCLUSION: College education and initial working experience were critical to professional identity formation for male nurses. Appropriate measures need to be taken to improve professional identity and promote gender diversity.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Male nurses experience stereotypes and obstacles that affect their career progression in clinical and leadership roles. The experiences of male students and nurses in educational and clinical settings are documented, but no research explored the experiences of nurse educators. PURPOSE: To explore and develop a deeper understanding of the lived experiences of male nurse educators. METHODS: An interpretive phenomenological inquiry was used. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 12 male educators in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Ricoeur's interpretation theory was used for data analysis. FINDINGS: The themes included "searching for respect and autonomy: from discrimination to recognition", "keeping up the pace: proving worth as nurse educators", "building relationship with the opposite gender: overcoming cultural constraints", "withstanding unfair female nursing and non-nursing management", "appreciating support from democratic management" and "envisioning a non-gendered nursing profession". CONCLUSION: Male educators surmounted various challenges while searching for respect and recognition and felt content with their professional growth. The greatest challenge was discriminative institutional and the government policies. The educators recognized that female dominance in nursing can be a hurdle, but they indicated that gender discrimination can be ended with collaborative efforts at personal, institutional, and governmental levels. Nursing regulatory bodies and institutions should develop policies that are conducive to recruitment of male and female educators. Separate sub-divisions could be established to provide support to and advocate for the rights of male nurses in clinical, educational, and leadership positions.

RESUMO

Men generally fare worse than women across the HIV cascade. While we know much about how men perceive the health services, we know little about how health workers (HWs) themselves have experienced engaging with men and what strategies they have used to improve this engagement. We interviewed 12 HWs in public health care services in Cape Town to better understand their experiences and perspectives. Health workers felt there were significant gaps in men's engagement with HIV care and identified masculine gender norms, the persistent impact of HIV stigma, and the competing priorities of employment as key barriers. They also highlighted a number of health service-related challenges, including a poor perception of the patient-provider relationship, frustration at low service quality, and unrealistic expectations of the health services. Health workers also described several strategies for more effectively engaging men and for making the health services both more male friendly and more people friendly.

RESUMO

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To examine nurses' perceptions of physical and verbal violence perpetrated by patients and visitors and to investigate themes surrounding gender and the incidence of violence. BACKGROUND: The prevalence of violence towards nurses is a concern for nurses and hospital administrators. However, nurses who work in acute care and mental healthcare settings are particularly at high risk. This study examines the occurrence, type of violence and gender issues in a regional public hospital of Queensland Australia. DESIGN: An exploratory, qualitative design. METHODS: Focus group interviews with 23 nurses from Emergency Department (ED), Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and Psychiatry Department (PD) working in Queensland regional public hospital, Australia. Qualitative data were transcribed and thematically analysed manually and by NVivo. COREQ research reporting checklist followed. RESULTS: Participants reported frequent incidents of verbal and physical violence on a daily basis. Severe incidence included punching, kicking, biting and scratching, as well as threats of using weapons, such as knives. Patients were more likely to exhibit physical violence, especially towards male nurses, while hospital visitors including patient's family were more likely to exhibit verbal violence. Allocating male nurses in volatile areas and to care for violent patients raises concerns that the male nurses may be seen by their patients as "bodyguards" and not as a professional nurse. CONCLUSION: Findings indicate that staff believe that violence is increasing, feel the burden to accept that violence as part of the job and that the bureaucratic processes of the organisation make it difficult to address violence or get support. Organisations need to be vigilant in ensuring assistance is accessible and simplified. RELEVANT TO CLINICAL PRACTICE: This study contributes new knowledge to the discussion concerning of gender issues. Identifying gender issues could assist in developing the necessary interventions to reduce workplace violence.

RESUMO

Patriarchy has been offered as the foundational paradigm for gendered issues in nursing; however, operationalization of this paradigm in order to improve nursing workforce gender diversity is challenging. The qualitative arm of the present study explored men's decision-making to become nurses within a larger gendered context. Findings were then assessed for fit with Gender Role Conflict Theory. Findings suggest that men undergo a process in which contrasting influences are considered. The findings' congruence with gender role conflict theoretical assumptions suggests suitable conceptual fit for male recruitment and retention actions and further research.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Nurses professional duty mean that nurses must care for patients without gender discrimination. Meanwhile, the intrinsic differences between men and women and the need for personal contact with the patients during care procedures can create challenges for male nurses in the process of caring for a female patient. AIMS: The present study aims to understand the challenges of male nurses in the care of female patients in Iran. METHODS: A descriptive qualitative study was conducted with 20 male nurses selected by purposive sampling. Data were collected through unstructured and semi-structured interviews as well as observations and were analysed using conventional content analysis, based on the Graneheim and Lundman model. FINDINGS: The findings revealed two main themes, including 'religious-cultural restrictions' and 'inappropriate organizational context'. DISCUSSION/CONCLUSION: Male nurses are faced with a combination of religious-cultural and organizational challenges in providing patient care without discrimination in clinical settings. In addition to negatively affecting the quality of nursing care and satisfaction for female patients, these problems also create a stressful work environment for male nurses. IMPLICATIONS FOR HEALTH PRACTICE AND POLICY: These problems can be alleviated in clinical settings by trying to ensure same-gender nurses and patients, especially when performing personal care. In addition to the efforts made by nurses to present a positive and real image of themselves in caring for female patients, health policy-makers should also attempt to improve society's attitude towards male nurses caring for female patients through the media.

RESUMO

AIM: To ascertain British South Asian male nurses' views on the barriers and enablers to entering and progressing in nursing education and careers. BACKGROUND: There is a shortage of men from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic groups in the National Health Service nursing workforce. There is a dearth of evidence on the views of British south Asian men on this subject. METHODS: A qualitative interpretative intersectional approach was used to carry out one-to-one interviews (n = 5) with British South Asian male nurses using a semi-structured topic guide. Interviews took place between July 2018 and February 2019, across England. A framework analysis approach was used to analyse the interview transcripts. RESULTS: The main themes emerging as barriers were as follows: poor pay and conditions; negative immediate, extended family, community views; and a lack of knowledge and awareness of the nursing profession. The main themes emerging as enablers were as follows: personal circumstances (including role models) and ethnicity (including the role of religion and masculinity). CONCLUSION: Findings suggest that the intersection between ethnicity and gender presents as an important enabler, as well as inhibitor, for British South Asian men. Nursing careers and salient barriers exist at a systemic level and include institutional racism. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING MANAGEMENT: Managers review policies and practice on unconscious bias and institutional racism in the recruitment, retention and progression of British South Asian men. Employers provide continuous professional development including mentoring support to help career progression for these men. Human resources colleagues develop culturally specific interventions to reduce the stigma associated with the nursing profession in the British South Asian community. Nurse recruitment colleagues consider places of worship as venues for delivery of these interventions when promoting nursing.

RESUMO

AIMS: The aim of this study was to investigate the lived experiences of male nurses in today's healthcare environment to understand the persistently low numbers of men in nursing. DESIGN: This study used interpretive description methodology, which aligns with nursing's approach to knowledge discovery by acknowledging the evolution and complexity of shared and individual experiences. METHODS: Participants, (N = 11), were recruited through the American Association for Men in Nursing using purposive sampling. Focused interviews were conducted between May 2018 - June 2018. Interviews were semi-structured, guided by open-ended questions and video and audio recorded. Data were analysed according to study design with categories and themes extracted using reliability measures. RESULTS: This study's findings reflected the unique experiences of each participant in a primarily female dominated work environment in clinical and academic settings. Our study identified thematic categories of role expectations and workplace relations for the men in the study. Role expectations were influenced by sociocultural views, professional acceptance and patient/family perceptions. Workplace relations were associated with being male, social cliques and peer support. CONCLUSION: Participants shared similar and distinctly individual experiences. Findings from this study indicate there has been progress toward improving male presence in nursing but additional efforts are needed to increase inclusivity. Findings can be used to make recommendations for professional change in nursing, strengthen diversity by refining ways to recruit more men, enhance patients' experiences and improve experiences for future male nurses. IMPACT: This study addressed low numbers of men in nursing. Main findings included role expectations and workplace relations and how they are experienced by men in nursing. Findings from this research have a multidisciplinary impact in the workplace, and affect care of patients and their families.

RESUMO

AIMS: To understand the working experiences and career trajectories of male nurses in China. BACKGROUND: Compared with developed countries, men were far more under-represented in the nursing profession in China. Little is known about the working experiences of Chinese male nurses and the contextual factors that contribute to their low participation rate in the nursing profession. METHODS: In-depth interviews with twenty-five male nurses and two hospital administrators were conducted. All interviews were analysed using thematic analysis. RESULTS: Chinese male nurses had better career prospects and promotion chances compared with female nurses. The extremely low participation rate of men in nursing was related to the prejudice among the general public as well as the low professional status and salary. Two unique contextual factors influenced the career trajectories of male nurses in China: (1) the major assignment mechanism in the college entrance examination and (2) the implementation of the two-child policy. CONCLUSION: Although Chinese male nurses enjoyed many advantages compared with female nurses, they also encountered many difficulties related to working in a female-dominated profession. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING MANAGEMENT: Appropriate measures should be taken to shift public attitudes towards male nurses, improve the professionalization of nursing and promote gender diversity and equity.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: In Arab countries, many nursing schools rely heavily on simulation-based activities to provide experiential learning to male students with regard to maternal and child care; however, no study has been conducted to explore their experiences with such simulation training. AIM: To describe the experiences of male nursing students who were exposed to high-fidelity simulation training related to maternity and child care. METHODS: Husserl's approach to phenomenology guided this study, through the use of a structured interview with 15 Arab male nursing students. A thematic analysis technique served as a framework for the data analysis. FINDINGS: Thematic analysis revealed four essential themes: gained competency; compensation for missed clinical experience; overcoming of cultural or religious barriers; and challenges related to the use of simulation technologies. CONCLUSIONS: High-fidelity simulation can be a viable option to clinical training for enhancing Arab male nursing student competencies when providing maternal and child nursing care, which are often not available in the clinical area or are considered to be off limits due to cultural or religious reasons.

RESUMO

This article explores concepts of gender difference for nurses working in Child and Adolescent Mental Health Nursing. Inspired by the author's own experiences he emerged ethnographic research data to explore how male nurses replicate a problematic performance sited between representing 'similarity' and yet 'difference' to their female colleagues. In this article, the author discusses how typical dichotomies of sexuality, gender and transformation are troubling for child and adolescent nursing discourses because they privilege particular representations of maleness, narratives of sexual multiplicity and disguise how the equity gaze is a persistent reminder in the minds of many male nurses that theirs is sometimes a prescribed performance of metaphorical sexless, gender nakedness and quietened voice which is disrobed and left like their sex in the locker room.
